Investing in your staff by educating them appropriately is the ONLY way to grow your business in a sustainable way. If you think you need to be responsible for holding all of the business information in your head - you are nuts! This information needs to be shared, so that you don't have to carry the burden of your business alone. After all - imagine if you got hit by a bus - heaven forbid! The entire business is at risk if you don't teach others how to run it.
Developing your people can be undertaken in many ways:
Training - on the trade, systems the business uses, processes that make it run, customer service, 'how you like things done' - the works.
Mentoring - being a positive role model and truly caring about the goals and dreams of your staff. Care enough about them and invest in their growth.
Accountability & Responsibility - give your staff roles and responsibilities that they need to be accountable for - staff are usually looking to take on more and will thrive if given the chance.
Performance indicators or targets - give the staff something to be measured on. How does success in their role get measured? Is it time frames? Reduced call backs? Project milestones? Give them something they have to 'hit' so they can strive for it.
Give them a roadmap for the future - find out what they want to develop into in their futures in their careers - and support them to do so. Staff will leave if they don't see a place for them in your businesses future if it is not shown to them.
By doing these things you will grow and develop a team of people who are committed to your business for the longer term.
